How to buy a black Tuber melanosporum truffle

Ask for the scientific name Tuber melanosporum and where the batch was harvested. The name ‘black Périgord truffle’ describes this species and alone does not prove it was harvested in Dordogne. A seller's French address does not prove all their truffles are French either.
Compare like with like
Distinguish fresh truffles, preserved truffles, pieces and flavoured products. Check net weight, price per gram, dispatch date and storage instructions. For prepared products, read the ingredients, truffle percentage and any added flavouring.
What does an inexpensive truffle mean?
Divide price by net weight to compare two batches in the same form. A small batch can cost less overall but more per gram. If you plan to grate the truffle, also ask about pieces, checking species, maturity and condition.
Ask about availability
At the estate, you can request a visit to discover Tuber melanosporum cultivation all year round, by quotation and with a seasonal programme. Harvesting and hunting with the dog are winter activities and depend on conditions. To buy truffles, view La Truffe française products and ask for availability and terms to be confirmed.
